Every time of day tells a different story.
One of the first questions we ask our clients when planning a beach session is:
"What do you want your photos to feel like?"
The truth is, there isn't one "best" time to photograph at the beach. Every part of the day offers something unique—from soft, peaceful mornings to vibrant sunsets and dreamy twilight skies.
Understanding these differences can help you choose the look that best reflects your story.
Here are the four lighting options we most often recommend.
1. Sunrise
Soft • Peaceful • Quiet
Sunrise offers some of the softest light of the day. The beach is usually calm, with fewer people and gentle colors that create a peaceful atmosphere.
If you're looking for photographs that feel intimate, fresh, and serene, sunrise is a beautiful choice.
2. Afternoon
Bright • Vibrant • Energetic
Afternoon light creates bold colors and a lively atmosphere. The sun is higher in the sky, producing brighter images with stronger contrast.
While this is the most challenging light to photograph in, it can also create fun, colorful images when planned well.
This option is ideal when scheduling flexibility is limited or when you're looking for a brighter, more energetic look.
3. Golden Hour
Warm • Romantic • Timeless
Golden Hour is often the most requested time for beach photography—and for good reason.
The sun sits low on the horizon, creating warm tones, flattering light, and beautiful dimension. Skin tones appear soft, and the entire beach takes on a golden glow.
If you're dreaming of classic, romantic beach photographs, this is usually our recommendation.
4. Blue Hour
Calm • Cinematic • Dreamy
Blue Hour begins shortly after the sun has set.
The sky shifts into deep blues and soft pastel colors, creating a peaceful and almost cinematic atmosphere.
These images often feel artistic, emotional, and a little more unique than traditional sunset portraits.
Blue Hour is perfect for clients looking for something different.
